Facebook or Twitter: Which are you using more?

In the world of soft drinks, the two big names are Coke and Pepsi. With guitars, it's Fender and Gibson. And when it comes to social networking, one can make the argument that Facebook and Twitter are at the top of the heap.

But in a way, Facebook has been in a class all on its own: since the social networking site launched in 2004, it has amassed more than 680 million monthly active users worldwide.

Micro-blogging site Twitter, by comparison, is estimated to have about 200 million users worldwide. However, tech and social media site Mashable's editor Adam Ostrow says he believes that Twitter is innovating rapidly and is "now entrenched in serious competition with Facebook for the much grander social networking crown."

"After announcing that it would finally be bringing native photo and video sharing to its service on June 1, Twitter's biggest product win to-date came on Tuesday, when Apple announced that iOS 5 would include deep Twitter integration," Ostrow wrote on CNN.com.

"That means that the 200 million plus people with iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices (or at least the tens of millions able to upgrade to iOS 5) will have the ability to do things like post photos, videos and links to Twitter with a single tap."

Meanwhile, Facebook's growth seems to be slipping, according to a website that tracks the social networking site's growth data, demographics and usage statistics.

The number of Canadian Facebook users fell by 1.52 million to 16.6 million during the month of May, Inside Facebook says. The site defines a user as a "monthly active user" -- someone who logs on to their account at least once a month.

The drop in Canada is in keeping with a global trend at Facebook where its growth is starting to slow in developed economies where it is entrenched.

The U.S. is still Facebook's largest market. But use there fell by six million users to 149.4 million in May.
